The Weeknd is now an American Music Award winner, nearly one year after he first graced the stage at the awards show to perform with Ariana Grande for her hit, "Love Me Harder."
The Toronto-based artist — who received five nominations at the ceremony — picked up the trophy for Favourite Album - Soul/R&B from Prince, and it's fair to say he "Earned It." The Weeknd was quick to show Prince some love in his acceptance speech, and gave several shout-outs to those who made his "Beauty Behind the Madness" album possible, including Kanye West, Ed Sheeran, Swedish songwriter and producer Max Martin, and Ottawa's own Belly, a Juno Award-winning rapper.
The "Can't Feel My Face" singer's AMA win was not just his first victory, but was also the first prize given out at the night. The Weeknd wrapped up his speech by thanking his fans, and "of course, my mother. I love you, bye."
The 25-year-old returned to the stage roughly two hours later to perform his Top 5 Billboard Hit single, "The Hills," surrounded by flames. One of the fiery sculptures was fashioned in the form of a "6" to pay tribute to The Weeknd's hometown of Toronto, and the city's nickname that has been popularized by his longtime mentor, Drake.
His performance also struck a chord with presenter Sean "Diddy" Combs, who took a moment to make sure The Weeknd received the credit he deserved.
"Before I present this award," said Combs, before pausing, "Can we give it up for The Weeknd one time?"
The Weeknd also won "Best Soul/R&B Male," and was nominated for two of the night's biggest awards, "Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Year" for "Can't Feel My Face."
