If you're used to eating common vegetables like potatoes and carrots or fruit like apples and tomatoes, it's the perfect time of the year to explore produce at your grocery store, something you can even experiment with over the holidays.

Fruits and vegetables are all generally good for you, but there are some healthy ones out there people tend to overlook, says author and certified holistic health practitioner Vanessa Chamberlin.

"The glorious thing about plant-based eating is that your grocery store or farmer’s market is full of an incredible array of foods, flavours, and textures," she says.

Chamberlin is referring to root vegetables like yuca and tasty greens like bok choy — foods eaten regularly by cultures around the world (and here), but are easy to overlook in favour of pre-cut carrots and celery.

"Even with great options and an endless menu of flavours and colours, most people fall into a routine of eating the same things all the time," she says.

And if you are trying any of these fruits and vegetables below for the first time, Chamberlin has also provided tips on how to cook these foods and how to add them to your diet. Which ones do you love the most? Let us know in the comments below
