Hip hop artist M.I.A. knows a thing or two about being a refugee.
The Sri Lanka-raised singer/songwriter left the South Asian country as a child when her father, an activist for Tamil independence, was pursued by the government. She eventually settled in London.
So it's no surprise she's released a song (and video) that draws attention to the plight of refugees worldwide.
The video for her single "Borders," which M.I.A. directed herself, shows her standing in front of various scenes that evoke the images of refugees that have been splashed across the news.
The very first shot depicts her standing over a landscape where refugees walk in straight lines, not unlike in this picture.
Later images show her sitting on a crowded boat, reminiscent of the boats carrying Syrian refugees to the Greek island of Lesbos.
The video is the second in M.I.A.'s "Matahdatah" series, a project that will become both an album and a film, Mashable reported.
We hope she keeps using her influence to remind people about the humanity behind these scenes. And we can't wait to see what she comes out with next.
