You've survived the hordes of Black Friday shoppers. You've typed in the last of your Cyber Monday orders. Now it's time to get into the charitable spirit.

And if you're looking for the right occasion to get into the mood, take note of Giving Tuesday.

Dec. 1 marks the start of a 24-hour campaign where consumers are encouraged to ditch the credit cards and spend time volunteering or donating to various charities.

The "opening day of the giving season" started in the U.S. in 2012 and made its way to Canada through several organizations including GIV3 and CanadaHelps.org.

As a result of the campaign, some of the 4,600 participating organizations are seeing close to a 100 per cent increase in donations annually, according to data from Canada Helps.

“We have two days that are good for the economy. Now we have a day that is good for the community too,” says Giving Tuesday's website.
