Pantone's 2016 Colours Of The Year Are Rose Quartz And Serenity

A socially conscious choice.

For the first time ever, the colourful folks at Pantone have not chose one, but two colours of 2016:

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Rose Quartz and Serenity!

Kicking of the new year on a softer note, Pantone, the global authority on colour, made the major announcement on Thursday morning that pays tribute to one major issue we faced in 2015: gender equality.

In a statement, executive director of Pantone Colour Institure, Leatrice Eiseman says, "Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace."

Pantone states that our world is currently experiencing a "gender blur" relating to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design.

"This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity," the website states. "The consumer's increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to colour usage."

Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520), a delicate pale pink, is described as, " a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure." And Serenity (Pantone 15-3919), a baby blue that is, "weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times."

Last year, Marsala, a complex and robust nude shade, took home the top honours of the annual selection, which chooses colours in thanks to their place in culture.
