Homicide investigators have taken over the case of a high-risk sex offender who disappeared from his halfway house and then later found dead in a North Vancouver creek.

Police issued a public alert for Cameron Leon, 22, on Dec. 1 when he failed to return to the Vancouver home as required by his release conditions.

Three days later, Leon's body was found in Mosquito Creek, said RCMP.

In light of autopsy results, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is now in charge of the probe "as it is believed that Mr. Leon is the victim of foul play," Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said in a news release on Wednesday.

She asked anyone who was in contact with Leon between Dec. 1 and 4 to come forward to help in the investigation.

Leon was on statutory release after serving a two-year federal sentence for assault causing bodily harm and sexual assault causing bodily harm.
