Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" Knocked Out Number One Xmas Song Spot

Attention holiday shoppers, Mariah Carey has left the building.

It’s the end of an era.

After 20 long years of leading retail Christmas playlists, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is no longer the most played holiday song, according to Paste magazine.

PlayNetwork, an entertainment company which curates music for more than 400 brands, pulled together data from their retail partners and compiled a top 20 list of songs that will be most-played in stores this holiday season.

According to their list, this year shoppers will be bobbing their heads to indie-rock band the Shins’ cover of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” which first appeared on the 2012 compilation album, “Holidays Rule.”

Meanwhile, Carey’s hit has fallen to number two for retail playlists. Paste reports it has topped holiday music charts without fail since its release in 1994.

PlayNetwork's list also includes a mix of modern songs, including Christina Aguilera's "Christmas Time" and Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath The Tree," along with classics like Ella Fitzgerald's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."

Interestingly enough, “Wonderful Christmastime” is widely considered to be one of McCartney’s worst songs, writes the New York Daily News. His own version of the track makes this list, but it’s only number 17.

But not to worry, this is one of the only holiday lists to snub Carey. She still comes out on top for Billboard’s Holiday 100, and the Shins are nowhere in sight.
