Peak TV? Number Of Scripted Shows Being Made Doubles In 6 Years

LOS ANGELES — Maybe there is too much TV.

FX Networks said Wednesday that it counted 409 scripted shows that aired in the U.S. in 2015, nearly double the number from six years ago. That means a lot of competition for viewers, on traditional TV and online.

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf startled Hollywood earlier this year when he declared that there is ``simply too much television.'' He said that this year or next would mark the peak.

FX counts scripted shows on broadcast channels like CBS, cable networks like AMC, premium networks like HBO and online operators such as Netflix.

The total doesn't include reality shows, news programs, sports events, made-for-TV movies, specials, daytime dramas or children's shows.

FX found 376 scripted shows last year. There were just 211 in 2009.
