THORSBY, Alta. — Several people have been hurt in a chain reaction crash southwest of Edmonton that forced RCMP to close part of Highway 39.

The collision near Thorsby involves three transport trucks and numerous other vehicles.

One person was in critical condition in hospital and another was in serious condition.

Four others were in stable condition.

Police say smoke from a controlled fire in the area, fog and icy conditions were all factors in the crash.

Pictures of the pileup show a long line of damaged vehicles on the highway.
