What The Colour Of Your Snot Can Tell You About Your Health

Don't even think about typing red snot into Web MD.

Looking at your snot is like looking at your poop — we all do it but we're all too embarrassed to admit it.

Fortunately this is a safe zone, and we're about to break down what those funky colours coming out of your nose really indicate. In the infographic below, Dr. Raj Sindwani of the Cleveland Clinic Head & Neck Institute reveals what normal mucus looks like, and what abnormal colours indicate. Just keep in mind, doctors very rarely use snot as an indicator of disease, so don't even think about typing red snot into Web MD.

And if all this booger talk hasn't left a bad taste in your mouth, this 2013 study from the University of Saskatchewan just might do the trick. Researcher Scott Napper believes picking your nose and eating your boogers is good for your immune system, due to the ingestion of environmental pathogens.

Mind you, Napper's theory has a flaw. People automatically ingest 1.5 quarts of snot daily as part of our natural bodily fluids, so he appears to be suggesting doing something that happens anyway.

So go ahead, blow your nose and look at the tissue, or let your kids eat it (if you can actually stomach it). If anyone asks, it's all in the name of science.

Check out the infographic below to find out what your snot is trying to tell you about your health.
