Tinder users in southeast Edmonton are being urged to swipe right for a council candidate who's found a way to stand out in a crowded field.
University of Alberta student Nicole Szymanowka is using the dating app in an effort to boost her chances of winning the Ward 12 seat on Edmonton city council in the byelection next month.
The seat opened up after former councillor Amarjeet Sohi was elected as a Liberal MP for Edmonton Mill Woods.
Szymanowka has thought of a clever way to stick out among the 29 candidates vying for the position, according to the Edmonton Journal.
"I'm trying to get young people more involved and interested," she told the newspaper. "There's a lot of young people to reach on Tinder."
Her council run was spurred by a National Post column about Edmonton's Metro Line LRT, and how much it has clogged up traffic.
"Stuff like that just makes my blood boil," Szymanowka said. "I'm going to do something, run for council, be proactive and see if we can change the image the city has."
Szymanowka insisted she's not using the app for dating — and she's not first to use it for political reasons.
In 2014, Ottawa council candidate Conor Meade used Tinder in his campaign for the Somerset ward, the Ottawa Citizen reported.
He lost to Catherine McKenney.
