If you're like most Canadians, chances are you start your day with a cup of coffee followed by one or two more throughout the day. But just because you drink it daily doesn't mean you're drinking it correctly.

In the infographic below by lifestyle website Art of Wellbeing, we discover seven steps to becoming a smarter coffee drinker and how to reap the benefits from your cup of joe.

Medical experts say drinking coffee daily, even if it's decaffeinated, can help protect against heart disease, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes and some types of cancer.

While more research is still required to verify that coffee is helping improve the body's health, Cornell University professor Tom Brenna says the good news is that "there is no evidence whatsoever for negative health consequences in the general population and if anything, the signal was in another direction. It seems to be protective."

Caffeine is also considered a natural performance enhancer and has long been associated with athletes. For more tips on how to make the most of your cup of coffee check out the slideshow below.
