Usually, the loudest cheers from inside Calgary's Flames Central come when Johnny Gaudreau scores a goal.
However, the sports bar shook with cheers and applause on Sunday for a different reason after Alberta-shot film "The Revenant" picked up three Oscars.
About 100 people attended the event's telecast, hosted by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 212, a union representing motion picture workers in southern Alberta.
Many attendees were part of the crew of "The Revenant," who worked on, among other things, the film's production design, cinematography, visual effects, makeup and hairstyling.
The film, which was nominated for 12 Oscars, a record in the province's film industry history, beating "Days of Heaven," "Unforgiven," "Brokeback Mountain," "Inception" and "Doctor Zhivago."
"The Revenant" took home hardware for best director Alejandro Inarritu, cinematographer Emmanueal Lubezki and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
“It shows the rest of the world that the people and crews and unions here are more than capable of making world class movies,” said Aaron McCullough in an interview with CTV News. McCullough worked as a paint coordinator on the film.
Damian Petti, head of the IATSE Local 212, said the party was a chance to both celebrate and raise the profile of filmmakers in Alberta.
“It was a difficult movie to be sure and difficult conditions. But those who stayed on are very proud of their achievements," Petti told The Calgary Herald.
Over 700 Albertans worked on "The Revenant," which filmed in Kananaskis, Canmore and Drumheller. Hundreds of extras were brought in from Alberta's First Nations communities, including Siksika, Tsuu T'ina, Sunchild and Maskwacis.
The movie made headlines for being a notoriously grueling shoot, with cast and crew suffering through freezing temperatures and tricky filming conditions.
Ricardo Miranda, Alberta's minister of culture and tourism, extended his congratulations to the team.
"I am so proud to be able to say that another Oscar-winning production was filmed right here in Alberta," Miranda said in a release on Monday.
