For many women and men, we know the power that makeup holds. It makes us feel beautiful, it gives us the confidence we need and of course, it's always fun to create new looks.
But for one beauty vlogger, makeup has allowed her to share an empowering message.
At the age of nine, Shalom Nchom had an accident with frying oil that left her with severe burns. This led to years of bullying and the discovery of makeup in an effort to shield herself from bullies.
"I developed skills of doing makeup by watching YouTube tutorials all the time, and just paying close attention," Nchom, who has been called "two-face" "burned face" and "monster," told SELF. "Sometimes I replay videos many times. It took me a while to know how to draw on eyebrows due to the fact that my natural ones were burned off, but it’s so easy now."
Cue the making of a YouTube channel and an online platform to not only teach women how to create a killer highlighted cheek, but to love their scars.
The 20-year-old's latest video entitled "Power of Makeup Collab with Yunnierose" shows Shalom applying makeup to only half of her face. Before conducting the skillful tutorial (her contour game is strong, FYI), she touches upon how she has learn to grow confident in herself, with and without the help of beauty products.
"Makeup or no makeup, you should be able to love yourself," the Nigerian-born artist said in the six-minute video. "I love myself for who I am. I'm accepting for what has happened to me. Makeup is not the reason why I'm happy. I'm happy because I love myself."
