Conrad Black's Toronto mansion is no longer for sale.
Bidding has officially closed on the former newspaper baron's nine-bedroom pad in Toronto's expensive Bridle Path neighbourhood, according to Concierge Auctions.
No other details were available on the auction website, but according to The Globe and Mail, bidding was halted Tuesday night when a pre-emptive offer came in.
About 20 guests and prospective bidders had gathered at 26 Park Lane Circle for a cocktail reception at 5 p.m. Just over an hour later, when bidding was set to begin, they were told negotiations were already underway.
The Georgian-style house has an estimated value of $21.8 million, and boasts 23,000 square feet of living space on a six-acre lot.
It also has an indoor pool, a two-storey library, and a chapel consecrated by two cardinals.
The house was crafted by Thierry W. Despont—whose clients have included Gianni Agnelli, Stavros Niarchos, Bill Gates and Calvin Klein, according to Concierge Auctions.
The house has been in Black's family for 65 years, but in an emailed statement last year, he said it's too big for just him and his wife.
