CALGARY — A report of a man with a handgun near a crowded Calgary park led to a strong police presence and ended with an officer opening fire.

Police were called Sunday afternoon about someone dressed in black and possibly armed with a gun who was walking near the southwest area park where children were playing soccer.

The loudspeaker-equipped police helicopter was used to evacuate the park and warn area residents to stay indoors until the all-clear was sounded.

Police say an officer discharged a gun when the suspect refused to comply with orders to stop.

No one was hurt and there was no immediate word on whether charges will be laid.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which looks into police actions, is investigating the shooting.
