VICTORIA — A Vancouver Island man described as a "pathological fire setter'' has been declared a dangerous offender and will be incarcerated indefinitely.

Provincial court Judge Carmen Rogers has sentenced Daniel Sutherland for a March 2014 fire at a Victoria-area mental health facility that caused about $35,000 in damage.

Sutherland's decades-long record contains about 90 convictions, including seven for arson.

Rogers says a psychologist once described Sutherland as "an obdurate, pathological fire setter,'' and she says nothing has stopped him from starting blazes, including court and mental-health orders and incarceration.

She says another psychologist found Sutherland suffered from a mixed personality disorder, with antisocial, narcissistic and paranoid features and meet the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia.

Rogers says nothing but an indeterminate sentence will adequately protect the public from Sutherland.
