Lately, we've been hearing a whole lot of beauty horror stories. And it's making us question everything.
First, beauty lovers freaked out after claims surfaced that cult-favourite EOS lip balm was causing "severe rashes, bleeding, blistering, cracking and loss of pigmentation" on customers' lips. Then, many men came forward saying their Old Spice deodorant was causing severe rashes and chemical burns under their arm pits.
Now, one woman is claiming dry shampoo is making her go bald.
DRY SHAMPOO?! SAY IT ISN'T SO!
Nicole Baxter of Northern Ireland took to Facebook to share a photo of a bald patch on her head, which she claims was caused by the very popular Batiste dry shampoo.
In the post, Baxter says she went to see a doctor after she started experiencing hair loss and burning sores and blisters on her scalp that were so bad she "would wake up several times a night due to discomfort/pain." The general practitioner then referred her to a dermatologist who diagnosed her with Triangular Alopecia (hair loss in one area of the head, usually in a triangle).
Eventually, she was asked to go in for a scary "scalp biopsy" which would remove a part of her scalp to see what was causing the blisters and sores. But before undergoing the procedure, Baxter's doctor noticed the scalp was recovering. The reason why? Baxter had stopped using dry shampoo.
"Moral of the story- Dry shampoo caused me to now have this bald patch on my head (which I still have and it may or may not grow back, but nothing can be done) and a terrible scalp for ages. Just wash your hair people! It is not worth having this awful patch that I might be stuck with on the side of my head all because I can't be arsed to dry my hair," Nicole wrote.
The post went viral with more than 28,000 shares.
Now before you freak out, here's the deal — this is one person's experience.
The same goes for EOS and Old Spice. Some people have a more severe reaction to a product than others.
And according to Metro U.K., a spokesperson for Batiste said, "As the U.K.’s number one dry shampoo brand for over 30 years, Batiste is committed to producing quality products which are used every day by our millions of happy customers. We would like to assure our customers that all our products are analytically tested for compliance to European Regulations. Independent laboratories conduct in-depth safety assessments and clinical patch tests for all products prior to launch. All our products have been certified as safe."
If you live for dry shampoo (like us), and you've had only positive (and life-changing) experiences, then keep doing you. Sure, there has been research done by Trichologists that suggests an overuse of the good stuff can lead to a flaky scalp, pimples, sores and baldness, but we recommend washing your hair frequently and using dry shampoo in moderation. Like Baxter preaches, "Just wash your hair people!"
