Mayte Garcia, Prince's Ex, Says Loss Of Their Baby Boy Left Her 'Broken'

"I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”

Two days before Mother’s Day, Prince’s ex Mayte Garcia opened up about the loss of their baby boy.

Belly-dancer Garcia got pregnant almost immediately after her wedding to Prince in 1996. In October of that year, their son, Boy Gregory, was born one month premature. Unfortunately, their baby had Pfeiffer syndrome, a genetic disorder that prevents normal growth of the skull, and died one week later.

On Friday, at Los Angeles’ Single Moms Planet's “Single Mom's Awards,” Garcia gave an emotional speech about the son they lost.

“It just wasn't my time yet. After that, I was broken. And I lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”

“Like most women, I always dreamt of becoming a mother,” she said. “It just wasn't my time yet. After that, I was broken. And I lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”

The couple divorced shortly after the loss of their child. Garcia then went on to star in VH1’s “Hollywood Exes” where she opened up about her relationship with the iconic singer.

“The show served as therapy for me. I opened up about losing my son and, in return, I gained a daughter,” Garcia explained.

“Long story short, a woman watching my show was moved enough to reach out to me through Twitter about adopting her baby. I took the offer as a sign that the universe, the mother, father, God wanted to give me a second chance at my dream of becoming a mother.”

The 42-year-old is now a mom to a daughter named Gia, who is four.

“We both needed to be loved,” Garcia said. “And five years later, she's my greatest gift. She is my angel, my everything.”

While Garcia went on to have a daughter following her divorce from Prince in 2000, the late singer did not have any more kids.

Prince also never discussed his son’s death publicly, Vanity Fair reports. This is likely due to the fact that he was adamant that his children have complete privacy.

Before the birth of his son in 1996, Prince said in an interview: “Whenever we give birth to our children, the world won’t know their names, their sex, anything. Our child has to make those decisions.”

Following Prince’s tragic death last month, Garcia paid tribute to the singer with a beautiful throwback photo on Instagram. In the caption, the belly-dancer mentioned their son.

“This man was my everything, we had a family. I am beyond deeply saddened and devastated ... I loved him then, I love him now, and will love him eternally... He's with our son now.”
