Chewbacca Mom Mask: Here's The Real Reason She Posted That Video

The answer is as hilarious as the mom’s infectious laugh.

Last week, Texas mom Candace Payne became a viral sensation after she posted a video of herself laughing hysterically while trying on a Chewbacca mask. In just three days, the four-minute clip racked up over 140 million views.

Now James Corden has asked the question on everyone’s mind: What inspired Payne to post the video in the first place? Turns out, the answer has to do with her kids.

I’m a stay-at-home mom. I only had a few minutes before I had to go get my kids from school,” the mom told the “Late Late Show” host on Monday. “I wanted to prove to all of my Facebook friends and family that that mask was mine.”

“I know that the minute that [my kids] saw it that they were going to take it from me,” she continued. “And I’m like, ‘I didn’t buy it for you, little kids. I love you, but this isn’t for you.’”

Since becoming a viral star, Chewbacca mom has been in for a world of surprises. Over the weekend, Kohl’s surprised her and her kids with “Star Wars” memorabilia and even gave Payne’s kids Chewbacca masks of their own.

On Monday, Payne, who is a big fan of J.J. Abrams, was surprised by the “Star Wars” director himself while filming a skit for “The Late Late Show.” And to top it all off, host Corden read an email to the mom from Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew saying that he will pay her a special visit during his upcoming trip to Texas.
