A Fort McMurray family has been forced out of their home for the second time after a fire spread through an Edmonton condo complex.
Eighteen residents fled their apartments after 4 a.m. on Monday when flames were spotted in a building in the southern Edmonton community of Summerside, according to CTV News.
For Ashley Kelly, her 11-month-old son, mom and brother, the blaze was a terrifying repeat of the massive wildfires that raged in Fort McMurray in May. The inferno forced her family and more than 88,000 of the city's residents out of their homes.
“I guess when I heard [my mother] scream ‘there’s a fire,’ just pure panic,” Kelly told Global News, recalling what it felt like to wake up to the smell of smoke.
Only one unit in the building was destroyed, but all eight have water damage from the firefighters' attempts, the Edmonton Journal reported.
Kelly's family will be staying with other relatives in Edmonton while they figure out their next steps.
Some Fort McMurray families were allowed to begin re-entry into the city last week, but residents of a few badly damaged neighbourhoods may have to wait months until their communities are deemed safe.
