Beyoncé Wins The CFDA Fashion Icon Award, Slays In Glitzy Givenchy Suit

The fashion world has officially declared Beyoncé an icon. And for that, we say SLAY Yoncé!

The international pop star made a surprise appearance at the CFDA Awards in New York City on Monday evening where she was presented the Fashion Icon award by none other than CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg.

The "Formation" songstress, who wore a glitzy black and white Givenchy pinstripe tailored suit and wide-brimmed hat, blessed the audience full of notable fashion idols with a powerful acceptance speech in which she reflected on the beginnings of Destiny's Child and their struggles to get designers to look at "four black, country, curvy girls."

"Starting out in Destiny's Child, high-end labels didn't really want to dress four black, country, curvy girls, and we couldn't afford designer dresses and couture," Queen Bey noted in her speech.

The 34-year-old went on to share the role her mother, Tina Knowles, who sat in the audience, and her late grandmother, Agnez Dereon, had in her appreciation for fashion growing up and well into her groundbreaking career. She discussed how her mother would individually sew hundreds of crystals and pearls onto garments, putting so much passion and detail into her work.

"I feel so much love and I feel so proud. As long as I can remember, fashion has been part of my life. Its effect on me actually started before I was born. Many of you guys don't know this, but my grandmother was a seamstress. My grandparents did not have enough money; they could not afford my mother's Catholic school tuition," Beyoncé recalled. "So my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns and made uniforms for the students in exchange for my mother's education. She then passed this gift onto my mother and taught her how to sew."

Queen Bey also went on to give a powerful message about body image to the designers in the room.

"We have an opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection," she said. “Soul has no colour. No shape, No form. Just like all your work, it goes so far beyond what the eyes can see. You have the power to change perception, to inspire and empower, to show people how to embrace their complications and flaws and see the true beauty that’s inside all of us."

And if you can believe it, the 20-time Grammy winner is totally a "Game of Thrones" fan, comparing herself to Khaleesi whenever she bares a garment her mother has designed, including her wedding dress.

"When I wore these clothes I felt like Khaleesi. I had an extra suit of armour. It was so much deeper than any brand name."

And Tina wasn't the only one by Bey's side on Monday night — her four-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, who wore a feathery black dress and white blazer (read: adorable), and husband Jay Z joined her on the red carpet where it was all smiles. This marked the first time the A-list couple were hand-in-hand since cheating allegations spread with the drop of "Lemonade" in April.

And did we mention the rumoured "Becky with the good hair" herself, Rachel Roy, was also in the room at last night's event? Yikes.

But you guessed it. That didn't phase Queen Bey in the slightest. She definitely went on to steal the show.
