Kirby Planet Robobot Review: The Lovable Character Is Back

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, our favourite pink ball returns to his roots.
Nintendo

Kirby, one of Nintendo’s most successful characters, first appeared in 1992 with the hit Gameboy game Kirby's Dream Land. He’s back now with his new game Kirby: Planet Robobot. In this game, you play as Kirby, a little pink ball who must eat his enemies to gain their powers and save his own home. He’s cute. He’s cuddly. He’s hungry. And he’s super fun to play as.

Kirby’s previous adventure was released in 2015, with the Wii U game Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. While good, this game (along with many of his more recent titles) was centred around a gimmick or a new spin on Kirby’s eating powers and the abilities they gave him, which strayed from the original Kirby games. For example, instead of eating his enemies, he would turn into a little clay ball that you have to guide around by drawing platforms for him. In this new game, however, Nintendo went back to Kirby’s roots for what feels more like classic Kirby.

In Planet Robobot, Kirby’s home planet, Popstar, has been taken over by robots and it’s up to Kirby to save the day. You move from level to level, eating enemies and solving puzzles to progress. In some levels you even ride in a robot suit to gain even more powers.

The levels are distinct from one another, and are very unique, which is impressive when the game has more than 30 levels. In one level you might be swimming through an ocean, and in the next running through a desert, bizarrely decorated with spaghetti, giant blenders and forks.

One of the Kirby games' strengths right from the beginning of the series has been their easy learning curve. They are immediately fun to play and simple to control with just four buttons. Anyone can play these games, even if you have never played a video game before, and Planet Robobot is no exception.

With all the new exciting abilities and fun, easy to play levels, this is one of the strongest games in the series. You won't just want to play it through once, either. It offers great replay value thanks to some hidden features.

I personally had a lot of fun with this game and think it is well-worth the $50 price tag. Kirby: Planet Robobot is available starting June 10, 2016, for the Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS systems.
