"We begin tonight with their names," says Anderson Cooper, beginning a CNN broadcast on the Orlando, Fla. shooting.
The anchor started the two-hour program Monday evening by reading the names of the victims who died in the Pulse nightclub shooting, which killed 49 people and injured more than 50.
Watch Cooper's segment below:
"They're more than a list of names, they're people who loved and were loved," he says. "They're people with families and friends and dreams."
Cooper's voice weakens and cracks as he reads out the names and gives the victims' age, profession and pieces of information known about their lives.
"I think it's important that you hear their names."
Their killer, a 29-year-old gunman, was shot and killed by police early Sunday. The massacre has been described as the worst mass shooting in American history — and has rejuvenated calls in the U.S. for an assault rifle ban.
