Last week, Brynne Huffman got the courage to throw on a pair of shorts before heading out the door to do some errands. While out, she harmlessly engaged in conversations with her fellow shoppers. That was when she was told by another woman to "rethink" her shorts.
Taking to Facebook, the Texan-based actress posted a photo of her outfit (mid-thigh denim shorts, a flowy white blouse and flip flops) and addressed the body shaming comment she experienced while out and about. In her post, he explained how the woman, who was wearing a T-shirt with the words "COEXIST," first complimented Brynne's hair before commenting on her body.
"Your hair really is amazing," the woman said, apparently cocking her head to the side. "You should probably rethink the shorts though."
Full of "rage," Huffman said she then turned to the woman and said, "You should probably rethink your shirt."
After the incident, Huffman wanted to address how women should not be tearing each other down.
"Plus sized doesn't necessarily mean unhealthy. Plus sized doesn't necessarily mean lazy. Plus sized doesn't mean ugly or undesirable or untalented or uncoordinated or LESS. THAN. HUMAN," the 39-year-old wrote on the post that now has over 10,000 likes and 3,900 comments.
Many positive responses have been pouring in for Huffman who wrote her legs "are not up [to] traditional beauty standards (read: Photoshopped) because cellulite." Yet, many did not see that as a flaw.
"When people are cruel like that it's about them not you. Wear those shorts with pride! You got 2 healthy legs, arms that work and your(sic) beautiful! What else do you need? Don't rate your self worth on what other people's opinion are. Strut it, babe!!!!" one commentor wrote on the viral Facebook post.
Huffman's final words in the post, before telling reminding women to "celebrate each other," was to eff society's beauty standards.
Her moral of the story? "Put on your shorts and get out there."
