GRANDE PRAIRIE, Canada — RCMP are investigating the death of a missing four-year-old boy whose body was found in an abandoned public pool in Grande Prairie, Alta.
Mounties were notified the boy was missing on Monday night.
Officers with Grande Prairie RCMP, the police dog unit and members of the Grande Prairie fire department and Search and Rescue were all brought in to look for the child.
Several hours later, his body was found in the Bear Creek Pool.
The people who found him tried CPR but RCMP Insp. Don McKenna says it was already too late.
Pool was closed to public
RCMP said the pool has been closed to the public for a few years but investigators couldn't say how the youngster managed to get behind the chain link fence surrounding it.
Officials said surveillance video showed the boy entering the area, but RCMP wouldn't confirm exactly how he could have died.
Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given said the pool had been emptied of rain water but explained that water would sometimes collect in the deep end.
