Posted: Updated:

OTTAWA — An Ottawa city councillor is offering his condolences to the family and friends of a man who died after a weekend confrontation with police.

Coun. Jeff Leiper for the for Kitchissippi Ward also says in a statement online that he has also received word from many residents offering help to the family of the dead man.

Police have not identified the man, but media reports quoting relatives identified him as Abdirahman Abdi. Leiper also identified the man as Abdi in his statement online.

"I received word that Abdirahman Abdi passed in hospital," read the statement. "I cannot express fully my grief."

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating. It said Monday a 37-year-old man arrested in Ottawa on the weekend had died.

The Special Investigations Unit says police officers responded Sunday morning to a report of a man causing a disturbance.

The SIU says the officers located the man and, at some point during the confrontation, he suffered medical distress.

The agency says it has since designated two subject officers and five witness officers. It is also asking anyone else who saw the incident to come forward.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
