WINNIPEG — A Manitoba man has been charged after a video of a puppy being abused was circulated on social media.
RCMP say the video shows a man throwing a German shepherd puppy in the air and letting it hit the ground.
Police say the puppy, named Asha, is being treated for her injuries at a Winnipeg veterinary facility.
At first there were fears the dog might be paralyzed, but veterinarians say it looks like she has a good prospect of recovery.
Dr. Corey Bartley says Asha has soft-tissue injuries and is badly bruised and sore, but there aren't any broken bones.
Desiree Klippenstein with Manitoba Underdogs Rescue says Asha is able to stand but so far hasn't been able to walk.
"She's in good spirits,'' says Klippenstein. "She is in some pain. She has control over her bladder, which is great.''
Klippenstein says as disturbing as the video of the incident is, she thinks people needed to see it.
"I think it's important to see what's happening out there and to know that things are being done and people can't get away with this kind of thing anymore,'' she says.
Jesse Young, who is 18 and from Easterville, is charged with causing unnecessary pain and injury to a dog.
Young is in custody and is to appear in court in The Pas on Tuesday.
