Singer Jojo is opening up about how her record label made her lose weight quickly by making her take dietary supplements.
In a new interview with PopSugar, the "Too Little, Too Late" songstress addressed the pressures many young women in the music industry are facing, including weight loss. The 25-year-old revealed she injected herself with supplements and only ate 500 calories a day, "a common thing [female singers] do" to get skinny.
"I was under a lot of pressure with a company I was at previously and they wanted me to lose weight fast. So they got me with a nutritionist and had me, like, on all these supplements, and I was injecting myself," she said. "It makes your body only need certain calories, so I ate 500 calories a day."
The "Aquamarine" actress understood the diet was the "most unhealthy thing [she has] ever done," but notes, at the time, she took orders because she feared her career would suffer.
"I felt like, 'If I don't do this, my album won't come out.' Which it didn't! So it's not like it even worked!"
Now, the "Leave (Get Out)" singer, who said she has gained all the weight back, has full control of what she wants out of her life and career, making it clear that what she really loves is "being strong physically, mentally and emotionally."
"I listen to other people's opinions. Listening and following are different things. I think listening and showing respect to people you respect... it works for me," JoJo said. "What you think about yourself and the decisions you make is what's most important."
