Keep your liver working at optimum capacity.

Sometimes it's easy to not have to worry about your liver. We know it has the ability to heal itself in a way that the rest of our organs do not, so we don’t necessarily treat it as well as we should — too many late nights out, not enough B vitamins. And the liver generally does its job of helping our bodies get rid of what they don’t want or need pretty quietly.

But liver health is very important, and studies suggest that paying some attention to your diet can help you keep your liver working at optimum capacity.

"The liver is one of the most important organs of the body,” says Dr. Scott Schreiber, a chiropractic nutritionist in Delaware. "It performs many functions including, but not limited to, cleaning blood, detoxification, storing energy, producing bile, regulation of sex hormones, produces many integral proteins, and regulates supply of vitamins and minerals. It is the only organ that can regenerate itself. That alone shows how important it is and why we need to keep it functioning optimally."

Including the 14 foods (shown in the slideshow below) in your diet might help your liver stay healthy — not to mention the other ways they can support your body’s general health. But you can’t take a shortcut on this one. Eat these whole foods for the right effect, instead of relying on supplements.
