COCHRANE, Alta. — Brother and sister grizzly bears are dead after being relocated away from Cochrane, Alta.

Provincial officials say the male bear was put down and the female died after being hit by a semi-truck on the highway between Cochrane and Canmore.

The bears had been relocated after getting into chicken coops and other food sources in residential areas near Cochrane.

Public Affairs Officer Brendan Cox with Alberta Justice says when a bear keeps coming back to the same spot it can become very dangerous.

He says the decision to put down the male bear was "difficult'' but officers have to make public safety their priority.

Grizzly bears are listed by the Alberta government as a threatened species.
