Tahmid Hasib Khan, Toronto Student, Still Detained In Bangladesh After Terrorist Attack

Posted: Updated:

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A University Toronto student detained in connection with a terrorist attack in Bangladesh will reportedly remain in custody for at least another week.

A number of media outlets have reported that a Dhaka court granted a request by authorities on Saturday to hold Tahmid Hasib Khan, 22, for up to six more days.

Khan was arrested earlier this month but hasn't been charged in last month's attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant in Dhaka that left 20 hostages dead.

Bangladesh English-language newspaper The Daily Star reported on its website that police told the court that investigators need more time to question Khan and a 47-year-old British national who has also been detained.

Khan is a permanent resident of Canada who is studying global health at the University of Toronto. His friends and family say he travelled to Dhaka to visit family and has done nothing wrong.

The attack that began on July 1 ended the following morning after Bangladeshi security forces stormed the restaurant, killing five armed gunmen and rescuing 13 surviving hostages.
