Across Canada, screens were tuned to what's expected to be The Tragically Hip's final concert. But for a brief moment, the crowd's attention turned away from the stage and toward a couple in the audience.
Fans caught a pair making out during "Bobcaygeon," a song named after an Ontario town nestled in cottage country. And from the agitated tweets, they were really into it.
A man wearing a Dion Phaneuf Leafs jersey quickly became known as #PhaneufGuy as Twitter users live-tweeted their observations. Witnesses threw in some subtle shade aimed at the team's former defenceman.
One user speculated they either really like the song Bobcaygeon, or they just got engaged.
She was right.
User Katie B. responded to the tweetstorm with a photo of her engagement ring, and confirmed that she and #PhaneufGuy did in fact get engaged during The Hip's last concert of their 10-city tour.
After news of frontman Gord Downie's brain cancer diagnosis, the Kingston, Ont. band announced their farewell Man Machine Poem tour with their final show billed in their hometown.
The highly anticipated set, and three encores, was watched live across Canada and around the world through the CBC.
