Back To School Shopping: Teachers Pay More Than Ever For Supplies

And it can get pretty costly.

If you think you’re stretching your wallet for your child’s school supplies every year, wait until you see how much teachers spend.

Teachers often have to reach into their own pockets to pay for school supplies. According to the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union, teachers spend about $525 per year out of their own savings.

In the U.S., it’s worse. Last year, some teachers admitted to spending more than $1,000 for supplies.

Teachers are responsible for creating a positive, creative and safe environment for children, but often struggle to do that with the resources they're allotted.

“Their little faces are just devastated when they don’t have books and colours,” DeAnn Moran, a teacher at Moore Public School in Oklahoma, says. “It’s amazing what that can do for a child.”
