Alberta PC Rules Could Stop Jason Kenney's Leadership Bid

Posted: Updated:

EDMONTON — A potential candidate for the leadership of Alberta's Progressive Conservatives says rules adopted by the party should end the bid by Calgary MP Jason Kenney to merge the province's two right-of-centre parties.

Sandra Jansen notes the rules adopted by the PC board of directors forbid any leadership candidate from taking actions that would harm the party.

Kenney is the only person so far to announce he is running to become the next leader of the Alberta Tories.

He is running on a mandate to merge with the Opposition Wildrose and form a new right-of-centre party to challenge Premier Rachel Notley's NDP in the next election.

Jansen says it would appear that a goal of replacing the party with a new one would fall into the category of doing harm, but she adds she will let party officials deal with that question when the race formally begins in October.

Kenney has yet to respond.
