Mourners Gather At Kensington Palace For Princess Diana's Death Anniversary

Unforgettable.

It's been 19 years since Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a horrific car crash in Paris, but the late royal is still as popular as ever.

Early this morning a small group of mourners laid flowers, cards, flags and posters outside the gates of Kensington Palace where the princess once lived with her sons William and Harry.

The touching tribute is a mere shadow of the flood of flowers that appeared at the palace in the days and weeks following her death back in 1997. According to Historic Royal Palaces, a group that maintains the grounds of all the royal palaces, within hours of the princess' death the grounds of Kensington were covered in tributes that formed a carpet on the ground.

The path leading to Kensington Palace, the former residence of Princess Diana's, is covered by flowers Monday September 8, 1997.

When the princess was laid to rest on Sept. 6, 1997, the palace opened its doors to allow mourners inside to leave notes of condolence for the Royal Family. The palace staff even worked rotating shifts for 24 hours until everyone in line was able to leave a message.

The "People's Princess" was only 36 years old when the car she was in crashed into a tunnel pillar killing her, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul.

Next year, Prince William and Prince Harry will join forces with Historic Royal Palaces to commemorate their mother's 20th death anniversary with a memorial garden on the palace grounds.
