Style Rescue: How To Style Your Favourite Summer Pieces For Fall

Don't pack away those summer clothes just yet!

With fall just around the corner, you might find yourself enjoying the last stretch of summer BBQs, lake dips and beach days, meaning you're probably not quite ready to bid farewell to those pieces you've been living in all summer.

While a cooler breeze offers more bearable temperatures, September is actually our favourite time for dressing in Canada. It's not too hot and not too cold, so you can totally still get away with wearing some of your summer faves like skirts, dresses and, believe it or not, shorts.

Who says we can't have it all? We say don't pack away your summer clothes just yet, as you can use them to seamlessly transition into fall.

Here are eight summer pieces to incorporate into your fall wardrobe:

One of our favourite ways to make the quintessential summer dress (the maxi) fall-appropriate throws a huge nod to the '90s — the slip dress worn with a T-shirt underneath. In case you don't have a slip dress yet, here's a gorgeous one from ASOS ($49).

Simply layer your favourite black or floral maxi over a white T-shirt for total '90s vibes. We love this relaxed crew neck tee from Old Navy ($10) that's perfect for layering.

If you're like us, you probably have a soft spot for denim. And this summer the denim skirt has definitely made a comeback, especially in the A-line button up department. We couldn't get enough of this classic staple, and luckily we won't have to ditch it just yet either. Looking to add to your denim collection? We love this pencil skirt from Madewell ($87).

Simply pair your favourite denim skirt with a silk blouse for a more polished, fall-appropriate look. If there's anyone who knows blouses, it's Aritzia. For a classic shirt you can wear again and again, and take from day to night, we love the Kennan Blouse ($135).

We mean, who wants to give up wearing flowy, floral dresses, like this one from Forever 21 ($22)?

One of the best ways to make a dress fall-appropriate is to pair it with a leather jacket. Actually, pair a leather jacket with anything summer-related, and it's automatically a fall outfit. Cover two trends at the same time with this bomber-style faux leather jacket from Dynamite ($69).

You've lived in your high waisted shorts all summer long, like these Japanese denim shorts from Grana ($45). You hate to see them go, but what's a girl to do?

Layer, of course! Adding some tougher pieces will instantly transform your look from summer to fall. Simply pair your shorts with a tucked in turtleneck, a sturdy belt and maybe even some booties, like these combat-inspired boots from Aldo ($140), and some cozy socks.

Whether you know them as harem pants or pyjama trousers, these guys have been a major go-to for summer, and can be for fall, too. We love this moody floral version from Le Château ($49).

During the summer months, the PJ-style pant would, of course, pair well with brighter pieces, but for fall, simply swap out the brights for warmer shades, like mustard, burnt orange and olive green. We're into this beautiful drapey coat from Club Monaco ($329).

Believe it or not, pastels are actually trending for fall, so this one is easy! So if you picked up a pair of light trousers, like these crops from Banana Republic ($110), you're in luck!

You can keep wearing your pastel pieces well into fall, but try adding some texture into the mix, like with this tissue-thin cardigan from Urban Outfitters ($59), and work your way up to chunkier knits as the weather gets cooler.

You've adored your super sweet and feminine lace pieces all summer long, and you're not ready to part with them just yet. Case in point, this gorgeous lace dress by The Jetset Diaries from Revolve ($235).

Good news is you don't have to pack them away! Simply pair these delicate pieces with juxtaposing items, like leather (booties) and army green (jacket or vest). You can never go wrong with these classic black booties from Zara ($139). Just be sure to add a touch of black somewhere else in your look, either with your jacket or an accessory to create balance.

Statement necklaces have been all the rage lately, and for good reason. They instantly add a huge dose of glamour to even the most simplistic of looks. Like this beautiful short statement necklace from H&M ($24.99).

Don't give your statement necklaces the boot come fall. Simply layer them over a button-up blouse, chunky knit or crew neck sweater, like this tissue thin Merino wool sweater from J Crew ($104). Either option is a great way to carry forward the gift that keeps on giving (a.k.a. the statement necklace).
