Rami Malek's 2016 Emmys Win Is A Huge Victory For Diversity In Hollywood

"I think we can keep going a lot further in that direction, not just in entertainment," the "Mr. Robot" star said.

We're seeing this, Rami!

"Mr. Robot" star Rami Malek picked up his first Emmy Award last night, making him the first minority actor in 18 years to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, according to the BBC.

In his acceptance speech, the 35-year-old actor, who is of Egyptian descent, said he hoped his win would open doors for more ethnic minority actors in Hollywood.

"Please tell me you are seeing this too," Malek said, referencing his "Mr. Robot" character. "For me to stand here as not the typical leading man and to have come home with this speaks a lot about where we're headed," he continued.

"I think we can keep going a lot further in that direction, not just in entertainment, but socially and politically, and strive to be as progressive as possible."

Malek's comments echoed "Master of None's" Alan Yang's acceptance speech on diversity in Hollywood. Yang, who won his first Emmy with series co-creator Aziz Ansari last night, told the audience that a lot more should be done for Asian-American representation on TV and the movies.

"There are 17 million Asian Americans in this country," Yang said, "and there are 17 million Italian Americans. They have 'The Godfather,' 'Goodfellas,' 'The Sopranos'… we got Long Duk Dong. We have a long way to go."

Malek beat fellow nominees including Kyle Chandler, Kevin Spacey, Matthew Rhys and "Better Call Saul's" Bob Odenkirk.

According to the BBC, the last non-white winner to win best actor in a drama series was Andre Braugher for "Homicide: Life on the Street" in 1998.

Since then, winners for that category have included the late James Gandolfini, Damian Lewis and Bryan Cranston.
