Calgary Police Get A Bad Performance Review From Citizens: Poll

"Calgarians have a negative view about the Calgary Police Service."

Almost one in two Calgarians disapprove of the police, according to a poll by Mainstreet/Postmedia.

"Calgarians have a negative view about the Calgary Police Service with 39 per cent approval compared to 48 per cent disapproval," said Quito Maggi, president of Mainstreet Research, in a release.

“Most people (49 per cent) also believe that CPS officers require better training to handle high stress situations, with just 11 per cent saying they did not require better training."

Calgary police have received an abundance of bad press over the past few months.

Some officers have been charged with bribery and harassment, videos of aggressive arrests have circulated online and many were upset after an officer who shot an unarmed man was not charged.

The poll also found that a majority of respondents were in favour of officers using body cameras.

"Sixty-one per cent strongly approved of officers requiring body cameras with another 11 per cent somewhat approving," Maggi noted.

The poll surveyed 823 Calgarians on Sept. 7, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.41 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
