Oh the irony!

Oh the irony!

According to the United Nations, one of the world's most popular honeymoon destinations also happens to be the country with the highest rate of divorce.

The tropical paradise that is The Maldives is considered the ultimate honeymoon destination. According to the Ministry of Tourism for the Republic of Maldives, the picturesque islands bring more than one million tourists to its shores every year.

But while The Maldives is a beloved destination by people wanting to celebrate their love, it fails in helping sustain it. In 2002, statistics showed there were 10.97 divorces per 1,000 people in the country per year. The number was so high it earned a Guinness World Record.

According to the Telegraph, other places where high divorce rates are common include: Russia, with 4.5 per year per 1,000 inhabitants; Aruba, with 4.4; Belarus, with 4.1; and Latvia and the United States tied with 3.6.

In Canada, it is estimated that 38 per cent of marriages will end in divorce, the CBC reports.
