Jim Prentice Dead: Political World Reacts To Passing Of Former Alberta Premier

"Great loss of a good man."

The Canadian political world was rocked Friday after news broke of Jim Prentice's death in a plane crash.

Prentice, the former Alberta premier, was one of four people who died after an aircraft crashed near Kelowna, B.C. on Thursday night.

The flight was en route to the Springbank airport outside Calgary.

Prior to leading the Alberta Progressive Conservatives, the 60-year-old father and grandfather served as a Tory MP for Calgary Centre-North from 2004 to 2010.

Tributes for Prentice poured in from politicians of all stripes after news of his death:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences to Prentice's family, describing him as someone who worked "tirelessly for the people of Canada and Alberta."

"Today, we mourn the passing of a great Canadian," Trudeau said.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark released a statement saying Prentice was a man of his word whose "handshake was worth more than any written agreement."

"Jim had a remarkable and distinguished career, but I think he took the most pride in being a husband, father, and grandfather. My thoughts are with Jim's family," she wrote.

Prentice left politics after the PC government toppled by the NDP last year. He took a job with global private equity firm Warburg Pincus in June.
