Tilda Swinton Has A Good Reason For Disliking 'Harry Potter'

For real.

Tilda Swinton has a bone to pick with the “Harry Potter” film franchise. In the December issue of Scots Magazine, the 56-year-old actress revealed that she dislikes the series because of its unrealistic portrayal of boarding schools.

While Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is portrayed as a warm and fun learning environment away from family, Swinton noted that this is not an accurate representation.

The “Dr. Strange” star attended West Heath boarding school in London when she was young. Speaking from first-hand experience, she called the school system “a very lonely and isolating environment.”

“That’s why I dislike films like ‘Harry Potter’ which tend to romanticize such places,” she told the magazine. “I think they are a very cruel setting in which to grow up and I don’t feel children benefit from that type of education. Children need their parents and the love parents can provide.”

Last year, Swinton revealed that her own kids, Xavier and Honor, do not attend boarding school. Instead, her teen twins are enrolled at Drumduan Upper School, an institution focuses on “art-based” learning.

“There's no grading, not testing at all,” the actress told The Observer in 2015. “My children are now 17, and they will go through this school without any tests at any time, so it's incredibly art-based, practical learning.

“For example, they learn their science by building a Canadian canoe, or making a knife, or caramelizing onions. And they're all happy 17-year-olds. I can't believe it – happy and inspired.”
