Ellen DeGeneres Shuts Down Trump's Ban Using ‘Finding Dory'

Brilliant.

A number of celebrities have hit back at President Donald Trump’s travel ban, but none have done so more brilliantly than Ellen DeGeneres.

On Monday, the 59-year-old comedian cheekily explained the plot of Disney’s “Finding Dory” on her talk show to school Trump on immigration. Not only was the animated film one that DeGeneres starred in, but it was also, ironically, the president’s movie of choice at his first White House theatre screening on Sunday.

DeGeneres began by explaining that Dory, who is Australian, is on a mission to find her parents, who are in America.

“I don’t know what religion they are, but her dad [played by Eugene Levy] sounds a little Jewish. It doesn't matter,” she joked. “Dory arrives in America with her friends Marlin and Nemo. She ends up at the Marine Life Institute behind a large wall. They all have to get over the wall and you won’t believe it, but that wall has almost no effect in keeping them out.”

She continued: “Even though Dory gets into America, she ends up separated from her family, but the other animals help Dory. Animals that don’t even need her. Animals that don't have anything in common with her. They help her, even though they’re completely different colours. Because that’s what you do when you see someone in need – you help them.”

DeGeneres concluded by saying she hopes everyone can learn something from this movie.

From the talk show host’s retelling of the plot, it’s clear the film draws a number of parallels to what is currently happening in the United States.

Since Trump signed an executive order on Friday temporarily banning immigrants from seven countries – including Iran, Yemen and Syria – a number of families have been separated. A 12-year-old Yemeni girl, for instance, was left stranded in east Africa with her father on Saturday after they were prevented from boarding their flight to Los Angeles, despite having an immigrant visa.

That same day, a five-year-old American boy who was travelling with a family member from Iran to Washington, D.C. was detained for hours at Dulles Airport before being reunited with his mother, who is Iranian.

While DeGeneres admitted on her show that she doesn’t like to get political, it’s clear Trump’s ban rightly struck a nerve with her.

Back in November, the 59-year-old told OUT Magazine: “I’m not really a political person, but when somebody’s acting like an entitled, lying brat, and you know he’s hurt a lot of people, it’s easy to see what kind of human being he is.”

On Twitter, fans are applauding DeGeneres’ brilliant way of showing how bad and ridiculous Trump's ban is.

You go, Ellen!
