WHITECOURT, Alta. — An Alberta man is being accused of trying to set a house on fire with some of his relatives inside.

Police in Whitecourt, Alta., say they got a call Monday from a man saying he was locked in his basement and was concerned about the safety of his wife and grandkids who were also in the house but weren't responding to his shouting.

RCMP allege the man's grandson had strewn cardboard and firewood around the house, doused it with a flammable liquid and tried to light it on fire.

The grandson allegedly left in his grandmother's vehicle and police later found the car in Peace River, got a warrant to enter a residence and found a man hiding in the headboard frame in a bedroom.

Police say the man had a handmade .22 pistol and the keys to the stolen vehicle.

Jayden Allen Lochhead, who is 19, is facing multiple charges including forcible confinement, attempted arson, possession of property obtained by crime and several firearm charges.
