Having kids is expensive, and some regions are more expensive than others.
According to Coyne College, the average cost of childbirth in the United States is a whopping US$10,808 per delivery. If a C-section is required the fee goes up to US$16,106, significantly more than the US$2,000 cost of a C-section in Spain.
And the U.S. isn't even the most expensive country to give birth in. That honour is bestowed upon Japan, where a typical childbirth costs approximately US$61,810. Fortunately for Japanese mums, the country is also considered one of the safest places in the world to give birth.
For their analysis, researchers at Coyne looked at differences in countries’ facilities, procedures, laws and traditions to compare costs.
Canadian fees were significantly lower than those in the United States and Japan, but slightly more than the costs indicated for South American countries. In Canada, the cost of childbirth averages US$3,195 for a standard delivery and US$5,980 for a C-section. Fees, however, vary depending on the need for an extended stay or private room.
As if that wasn't costly enough, Moneysense.ca reported in 2011 that it would cost Canadian parents a whopping $243,656 to care for a child until the age of 18 — that's almost $265,115 if you take inflation rates into consideration!
