The Title Meghan Markle Stands To Gain If She Marries Prince Harry

Nope, she won't be a princess.

While the world awaits another royal engagement, some can't help but wonder what actress Meghan Markle would be called if she accepts a proposal from Prince Harry.

Royal titles aren't easy to come by — not that it's easy to find and marry a prince either! Though Prince William refers to Kate Middleton as a princess, publicly she is known as the Duchess of Cambridge as a result of Prince William being given the title Duke of Cambridge.

According to Pop Sugar, this isn't the only title the Duchess has. Upon her 2011 wedding date, Middleton officially received the title Princess William of Wales. Should Markle and Harry go all the way, the "Suits" star could end up with a similar moniker: Princess Henry of Wales.

Of course, upon marriage Harry's title is also expected to change with many predicting he will be named the Duke of Sussex, meaning Markle could very well become the Duchess of Sussex, but Elle.com notes he could be given the duke of Clarence, Oxford, Cumberland or Buckingham.

"Most likely, [Harry] will be created a Duke. Sussex is available so [Markle] would be HRH the Duchess of Sussex. Her rank would be a princess by marriage of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland," royal historian Marlene Koenig explained to the royal experts at Royal Central.

Though Middleton (and potentially Markle) would have the word princess in their official titles, Royal Central is quick to point out that you cannot become a royal through marriage, hence why their titles are attached to their husband's.

And thus, in the event of a divorce, royal spouses lose their "Her/His Royal Highness" status as the late Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson did.

Duchess Kate's name could undergo a couple other changes though. In the event Prince William is named King, Middleton's title will most likely be Queen Consort, but she could also be referred to as Princess Consort, just as Prince Philip is the Prince Consort and not the King.
