An Amber Alert has been issued for a missing six-year-old boy in Saint-Eustache, Que., northwest of Montreal.
Quebec provincial police say he went missing at about 5:35 p.m. Thursday and believe he is with his father, 41-year-old Ugo Fredette.
UPDATE: Sept. 15, 5:19 p.m. EST: The six-year-old who was the subject of an Amber Alert has been called off. Police say he has been found safe.
Police say he may be driving a white Ford F250 pickup truck with licence plate FGY3936 and the word "Axon" on the side in red, but also say he could be driving a similar truck with the license plate FLK5965.
Canine units, divers and a helicopter are among the crews helping to search for Fredette and his son.
The French service of The Canadian Press has learned that a woman was found dead in a residence in Saint-Eustache and that her death may be linked to the boy's disappearance. The woman has since been identified as the mother of the boy, as of early Friday morning. Veronique Barbe, 41, was married to Fredette, and was the mother of four children. Barbe and Fredette shared one child together, the six-year-old boy.
Ugo Fredette, meanwhile, worked on a documentary about the abduction of Cedrika Provencher, a nine-year-old girl from Trois Rivieres, Que., who disappeared from her home 10 years ago. Her remains were found in a wooded area in December 2015.
Her grandfather, Henri Provencher, who runs the Cedrika Provencher Foundation, posted on Facebook appealing to Fredette to hand over his child to police "without further delay."
"I think I know him a little bit, and I know he's a good-hearted man," said Provencher.
