How to Look Good Without Makeup

Posted: 03/ 9/2012 9:01 am

Makeup may be the ultimate way to transform your face in minutes, but wouldn't it be nice to roll out of bed looking fresh faced in your natural skin? A pretty face is an uncomplicated face. And by that I mean eyebrows are tidy, there aren't any stray facial hairs poking out anywhere, skin is clear and fresh, teeth are white and flossed and dark spots are not left untreated. It's quite a laundry list, but all of this is easily done at home. The latest slew of beauty products are designed to target exactly these picky details. Listen up!

You know that moment where you're in the car, you pull the visor down, slide open the mirror to check your lipstick and discover you weren't as thorough with your brows as you thought? Or worse: the fixings of a mini moustache playing at the corners of your mouth. Horrifying! Elizabeth Grant may have the solution for you. A tweezer with a built in mini flashlight. Sound gimmicky? I thought so until I tried it. The tweezer is wonderful. One of the best I've tried. The light is powerful and can be turned on and off. The case comes with a compact mirror for exactly these moments. Thank you, Beauty Gods!

Also adding light to the situation is Revlon's Spotlight Eyelash Curler with LED Technology. The lighted head design allows you to see every lash as you curl them to ensure no stragglers are left behind. It takes a little practice, but it's an interesting twist on the standard eyelash curler.

Crest 3D whites strips got a 70 per cent approval rating from ChickAdvisor Review Club members for effectively whitening their teeth in two hours. Also on the plus side, it costs considerably less than kits from the dentist. Don't forget to floss though. Nothing ruins a white smile like gunk between your teeth.

Raise your hand if you've had microdermabrasion at the spa. Neutrogena has a less expensive solution you can do at home several times a week. Their Healthy Skin Rejuvenator comes with 12 pre-dosed exfoliation pads with ultra-fine crystals. Be careful not to undo all of that rejuvenating by forgetting to apply a moisturizer with sunscreen after. Skin is more sensitive after exfoliation.

There are many dark spot correctors on the market, but two of my favourite skincare brands have come out with new ones I was giddy to try. Vichy's ProEven Daily Dark Spot Corrector is used as a daily moisturizer under sunscreen to reduce the appearance of dark spots from aging, sun damage and acne.

La Roche-Posay's Redermic R Dermatological Anti-Aging Treatment Intensive (yes, I totally agree with you about their product names being lengthy and often confusing) is a more aggressive approach to combating dark spots and other signs of aging. The star ingredient, Retinol may be a dark horse in the skincare industry for being somewhat hardcore, but I think dark spots and wrinkles are hardcore, too. Agree?

Now that you look all glowy and fresh-faced, you can head out the door sans makeup. But, I know you want to cheat and put a little something on and I respect that. B.B Creams are the latest must have. B.B stands for Beauty Balm, and it's basically a combination of several beauty products in one such as serum, foundation and cream. So you're only cheating a little with the hint of foundation. Garnier's newest is Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream and CoverGirl and Olay teamed up to make Tone Rehab 2-in-1.

If you have any other tips for making your face look flawless, I'd love to hear them in the comments!

for a second i thought the eyelash curler was a heated one. just lighting up?! i assume if i was doing some sort of beauty thing, i'd be already doing it under a light of some sort as well

I have a question, if anyone would like to help me out. How can microdermabrasion be good for you when it's basically scratching up the surface skin of your face? Doesn't that lead to more problems in the long run, like infection, redness, etc?

You just reminded me of that bloody St. Ives Apricot Scrub. HORRIBLE FOR YOUR SKIN. Exfoliating grains should be soft and gritty and spherical in shape. It is literally crushed apricot and has many sharp grains. You may look better at first but on top of being extremely abrasive, you end up getting broken capillaries into which bacteria can get in and start breaking you out.

The pores on your face are all gunked up with oil, leftover makeup, lotions, and creams. The cells of your skin are constantly regenerating, and there's a layer of dead skin on your face giving it a dull look. (this is my thinking, if I'm wrong, someone may set me straight). While one might assume one's complexion is a delicate thing that must not be disturbed or manhandled or scrubbed (thinking as you do, or thinking that it will 'cause' wrinkles), and that delicate pat-pat-patting with water and piling on even more lotions and creams - this is wrong. Microdermabrasion removes all the stuff smothering your skin, which regenerates constantly. You don't have to scrub or use a brillo pad! I myself use sugar or salt on a wet washcloth, mixing in a dollop of skin cleanser, and gently wash my face in circles. I rinse and come out looking like a new rose! Put on moisturizer right away and I'm good to go. The key word to exfoliating is gentle, but exfoliating should be done on a weekly basis.

And they're all loaded with chemicals - wouldn't go near any of them.
Only put on what you would eat. A high percentage of whatever goes on your skin is absorbed into the bloodstream, and the chemicals will age you faster in the long run!

Nonsense. These chemicals will hardly have any negative effect. The body processes out toxins and the small concentrations of parabens through our urine. You are safer with an FDA approved clinical product loaded with chemicals than a natural product screaming about the effects of some bizarre new plant they discovered in the amazon.

This is ridiculous. I rarely wear makeup and my guy tells me I'm beautiful all the time. I had to laugh at the title of this tidbit...How to Look Hot......I did it yesterday. I worked at my ironing board for over 2 hours!

You're my kind of lady. My wife very seldom wears any kind if make-up and to me, she's the most beautiful woman in the world. She doesn't try to look "hot", just let her natural beauty come through. It's what's inside, not painted outside that counts.

Some people may need makeup.

I have a little tiny nitpick about your "rolling out of bed fresh faced." I think it's unrealistic to put pressure on women to look 100% as soon as they wake up. It usually takes me a few minutes for my eyes to properly open and get going. That said, I think women can look beautiful without makeup.

After trying many different exfoliators throughout my life I've recently fallen in love with a $5 brush from Sephora. Didn't want to spend $30 on the Olay mechanical brush and definitely didn't have $200 for a Clarisonic. I get a little arm workout but it leaves my face really bright and smooth.

My two other favorite beauty products are more expensive. Shu Uemura's cleansing oils are divine and leave my skin very soft. Chanel's night lotion is light enough that I wear it during the day. Most days I just use my favorite 3 beauty products but sometimes I'll add a little mascara or lip pencil.

I swear by my Clarisonic for a good cleaning and a good glow. I have just started on Avon's Genics, and am hopeful - I do FEEL smoother skin, but at 43, I need to give it more than a week before I'll know anything.

Eyelash curler w/a light? I don't get it........Guess I'll take my chances with stray lashes using my good old Maybelline.

Clarisonic is hands down the most amazing part of my skin routine.
