Neck Tattoo or Not, We Should Be Boycotting Chris Brown

Posted: 09/11/2012 2:51 pm

Chris Brown took over the news yet again today with his absurd neck tattoo. Most of us assumed it depicted the face of an abuse victim -- one which bore striking resemblance to the police photo of his ex-girlfriend Rihanna -- but is supposedly a Mexican sugar skull based on a MAC cosmetics design.

Whether this late-afternoon explanation is damage control or a sincere shout-out to the Day Of The Dead we probably won't find out (at least until his next Twitter outburst). But what's worse than his poor taste in body art is the continued celebration of the singer at the hands of "Team Breezy," a group of hundreds of thousands who refuse to acknowledge that he is a misogynistic, damaged, sick, and disturbed human being. (Not to mention a music industry that continues to shower him with accolades, most recently at the MTV Awards where he was also seated near Rihanna for maximum media attention.)

Even if he hadn't hit Rihanna until her face was swollen and bruised, to get a neck tattoo that, intentionally or not, looks like a battered woman is alarming. If you knew somebody who got the same neck tattoo in real life, you would justifiably freak out. However, this recent stunt just adds to his legacy of not giving a fuck about his behaviour or the consequences stemming from it. Just look at screencaps of his post-Grammy Twitter rants if you need proof of just how badly he "doesn't care" what we think.

But the truth is, he does. An attention-monger to the highest degree, Chris Brown used the Grammys to announce his "comeback" (from destroying the Good Morning America green room or being charged with assault, I guess?), and took to social networks afterwards to champion himself and to pay homage to "the haters." Following his fight with Drake in June, he did the same thing to perpetuate more "Breezy versus the world" propaganda, riling up his misguided army for the sole purpose of making himself feel like a hero.

But a hero doesn't romanticize violence against women. Regardless of what one's been through or overcome or has had to endure, a hero would get the help he needs and try to right his wrongs. A hero would choose to LEAD "Team Breezy" (for good!) as opposed to using them to stroke his own ego. Chris Brown is no hero -- and none of this is news, either.

Nothing is news here. Hundreds of pieces have been written about Chris Brown, Rihanna, and what it all means, but by writing them, we fall into the same trap: giving him press and Google alerts and fodder for rants which is everything he wants. The haters fuel him. The anger fuels him. And then he uses that fuel to unleash more hate and anger upon the world, which all of us are affected by.

Because we are all affected by this. Upon news of Chris Brown's body art, most of our Twitter feeds blew up with people who were appalled, disgusted and understandably upset. It is upsetting. Chris Brown being famous is upsetting. Chris Brown being celebrated is even MORE upsetting. The fact that I have to write a piece explaining why Chris Brown is upsetting is upsetting, too. But those men/women/children who subscribe to Team Breezy believing that a strong man is an angry one who "overcomes" (those who speak out against abuse? Those who fight for human rights?), is the most upsetting of all.

I'm a hypocrite for writing this, for feeding into the Chris Brown frenzy and for giving his actions any attention whatsoever. But it's a tough choice: do you ignore him, hoping he'll go away (the way we do with many existing systemic problems, and which never works), or do you acknowledge it with the type of reaction most of us keep having (read: face-palms and blind rage)? Maybe it's time to do neither.

Maybe now is the time that we finally put a mark in the Chris Brown "lose" column, but channel our own anger, frustration and feelings of helplessness into actually helping. Our cities are filled with women/girls/boys/men who have been and are being abused, and instead of making quips about the type of monster Chris Brown is (and he is), why don't we donate money to shelters or volunteer where possible?

At the very least, we can stop buying his music. We can make a statement by choosing not to entertain Chris Brown -- or more specifically, by choosing not to let him entertain us.

Chris Brown doesn't oew anyone any more apologies. Rihanna accepted his apology years ago. For the record here is a video of his public apology for his abusive behavior issued in 2009. There are actually more public apologies on record, as well. He did the talk show circuit apologizing for what seemed like months. More than I have ever seen from any other celebrity abuser. Watch for yourself. This is just a tacky "hit piece". These are so casually done to black men.

You're right, he owes no one anything. It's not about what he owes society. It's about the segment of society that has been his "wingmen". Is that segment of society the abusers and the abused? Are their lives so devoid of self respect and honor and full of moral coruption and do they live the abusive life? Clearly this is so as I used to think CB was adorable before the "Ri Beat-down" and now I think he's ugly, stupid and he makes me retch. I question the intellectual and emotional level of his "fans".

Has the author of this piece responded as to why Chris Brown should be boycotted and not other abusers in entertainment? Why this man? What is it about him that we need to focus our rage?

If people call for boycotts of Daniel Tosh they should be screaming for boycotts of Chris Brown.

How about we boycott Rihanna as well? Neither are paragons of virtue. The media insists on talking about an incident that happened 4 years ago, Rihanna is still sleeping with him, she manipulated the media to get rich, and still it's discussed to peddle her nonsensical auto tuned hypersexulized nursery rhymes. Boycott Brown, Boycott Rihanna. Don't Boycott Rihanna, then don't Boycott Brown and let's stop talking about this.

Really? Chris Brown is a SURVIVOR of Child Abuse! I commend him for his many years of service working with children of abuse and child victims like himself. Why don't you report on that? "A monster"? Far from it and shame on you for saying it!

So, that charity work makes up for his current anger issues? I'm not saying that people don't make mistakes, but take the blinders off.

And, I have never purchased anything involving any of the names you mentioned. Most of them I also consider wastes of entertainment figures.

Did you advocate boycotting Sean Penn for his DV episodes with wives Madonna & Robin Wrgiht? How about Ozzy Osbourne for his abuse of wife Sharon? How about Country star Alan Jackson for his abuse of his wife Denise? What about Country star Rodney Atkins who was arrested on DV charges against his wife Tammy in Nov 2011? Did you boycott Tommy Lee for his 22 accounts of abuse against wife Pam Anderson? Are you now boycotting Pop star Pink for recording a new song with Rapper Eminem who beat his wife Kim Mathers on multiple occasions and made songs about killing her? No, but Chris Brown who as a TEENAGE whn he had 1 fight in 2009 should be boycotted in 2012. Yeah, okay, right....
07:29 PM on 09/12/2012
What is with you WHITE FEMINISTS and this 23-year-old young black man? I mean really? Okay as a TEENAGER almost 4 YEARS AGO Chris Brown and Rihanna Fenty had 1 fight. We all know about it as you ppl discuss it every chance you get. The BULLYING OF THIS YOUNG BLACK MAN is a grand example of racism at it's worse! Shame on you ppl for constantly attack anyone over their TEENAGE PAST! How would you like it done to you? I will forever support Chris Brown as I did Michael Jackson when you pulled the same "boycotting stunt" with him!

No woman who is an abusive relationship thinks she deserves any better ... men like Gibson and Brown don't go after women strong women with a sense of self-respect like Michelle Obama, they go after the ones that don't think they matter.

.... I was one.

Not anymore.

So you wrote this entire article based on the fact that Chris Brown got a tattoo? You want people to boycott this dude because he got a tattoo over his already tattoo covered body? You want people to boycott a dude who abused a woman years ago and who is still in love with him to this day?

Funny, how most of the people who call for boycotting Chris Brown are white. All those twitter posters in this article were white. Where is the boycott over Charlie Sheen? Boycott over Alec Baldwin cursing his own daughter out? Boycott over Mel Gibson and his racist rants?

Funny how people forget about all that but the remember Chris Brown's situation liked they lived it themselves.

Ms. Donahue - why don't you write about the double standard of both Rihanna and Chris Brown instead of just focusing on him alone as the only one that did something wrong? Granted, when Chris Brown raised a hand to Rihanna, he was wrong and was rightfully punished for it. But where was her punishment? She readily admitted on national television in interviews after the attack that she was equally as violent and had at times hit him. And that's ok? The double standard comes in when her punishment consists of "Poor Rihanna" instead of some serious counseling for herself. Frankly, neither of them should receive accolades, awards, or the amount media attention they get. They are both victims and perpetrators and if you are going to punish one, the other should be punished too. Just because she is a woman, that does not give her the right to hit another human being either and then be praised for it.

Please stop it with this foolishness. Lady, become an advocate for something worthwhile and leave this topic alone. Teenagers are buying his music and they are not reading HP so stop please and keep his name out of every freaking blog, gosh!

Why are we only supposed to boycott Chris Brown? Rihanna admitted in her several interviews after that incident that she was violent herself and hit him. If you are sayignt o boycott him because he hit her, why does she get off the hook? So its okay that woman beats the crap out of a guy but he hits her back and it's all "Poor Rihanna/Hate Chris Brown"? I don't think either of them should get awards or as much media attantion as they do. Frankly, she's just as bad a role model as he is.

There is a woman hit every 45 seconds in North America ...
Two women that woke up this morning will be murdered by a partner by the time you go to bed tonight ...
If it were your mother, sister, aunt or daughter ...
It bloody would matter.
