Happy Birthday HuffPost Québec!

Posted: 02/08/2013 8:09 am

I am delighted to wish a very happy first birthday -- or bon anniversaire -- to HuffPost Quebec! And I am so proud of how much you've grown under the leadership of your Éditeur et rédacteur en chef Patrick White, and the guidance of everyone at HuffPost Canada and, across the pond, Le Huffington Post in France.

So, to celebrate the occasion, I wanted to highlight some of the impressive accomplishments in your first year.

You've grown to nearly 315,000 UVs a month. Your coverage, in particular, of the May student riots and the election drove the conversation in Quebec and beyond. Your fabulous Art-de-vivre section, launched in August, already has 1.2 million page views. You're bringing HuffPost's values and voice to the people of Quebec, and -- just as important -- helping the people of Quebec tell their stories themselves.

So I want to say merci du fond du cœur to Patrick; Art-de-vivre editor Myreille Simard; senior editor Isabelle Marceau; reporter Patrick Bellerose; news editor Christian Duperron; and editors Myriam Lefebvre, Catherine Levesque and Geoffrey Dirat.

Once again, happy birthday HuffPost Quebec!

And Ms Arriana
May I suggest two worthy news stories which need scrutiny?
According to HSI and the Animal Defense League, Quebec is the capitol of animal abuse in Canada.
And, apparently, the rate of child poverty rivals Mexico. One in three children are malnourished here.
Some American style investigative journalism would be most appreciated on these issues.

Many people do not know that Quebec is officially French speaking but in essence bilingual or that French is spoken at home by over a quarter of all Canadians, New Brunswick and Ontario are officially bilingual which adds to the Francophone totals. She also fought off US invasions in 1776 and 1812 and is the home of our National Anthem first composed and sung by the Jean Baptiste Society. And no, I don't speak French.

Wow, I’m sorry I had to answer back as many things you mention are wrong. I’m sure you don’t speak French but you must be a federalist.
French is spoken at home by 22.1% of the Canadian population and 80% of Quebecers. That rate is higher than Americans or Ontarian speaking English at home. Montreal is in essence bilingual and the rest of Quebec is mainly French. There is no official language in Ontario and its de facto English. The only officially bilingual province in Canada is new-Brunswick.
When the national anthem of Canada was composed, Quebercers called themselves Canadians and the Canadians of today called themselves British. English Canadians stole our name as part of their grand strategy to assimilate us.

Actually I thought it was about 25-27% spoken in the home inclusive of Ontario and New Brusnwick which are both officially bilingual. Quebec is officially unilingual but in essence bilingual but all three provinces and Canada are in the Fancophonie. I live in Ontario, my son works in French in Quebec City, married a local girl and their kids go to an English school as is the perogative on any Anglo-Canadian parent if they so wish, while immigrants are streamed in to the French system. The Anthem's orginal French lyrics are glorious and liturgical/historical vs. the dull English revison and as to assimilation get over it, never was nor will be the intent to accomplish save for the fear mongers who press misdeeds that never occured. Bill 101 comes to mind and the ability to manage her own immigration policy protects Quebec from being innudated by Les Allophones and Anglophones but I do admit Duplessis and others used the Church and James St. to control a priest-ridden society, but the quiet revolution freed Quebec from both. Do they tell you in the isolation class how hard it is to get into French immersion classes in Ontario, or that there IS a seperate French School Board as part of the Public system or "Canada" is an Iroquion name to describe where they lived, adopted by Jacques Cartier?

Continued....
I wonder who is "she" but I assume it’s the Quebec nation. Many Canadians think that Quebecers were allowed to keep their language out of generosity from the British and because the brit leaders of the late 1700’s wanted cultural diversity. HAHAHAHA. By reading most of the comments written in the huff post, if they could have, they would surely have deported all of us. Actually, the only territory loyal to Britain in 1776 was the ancient New France. To secure the support of Quebec population, they allowed Quebecers to keep their language and religion. More rights were granted in 1812.
Actually, Quebec as we know it would never have existed without the treat of an American invasion. Also, that the federalist will never admit to it, Canada would never have existed without the support of the Quebec people.

...er... eventually we'll have to speak English in whispers, as we look over our shoulders... living in a free Country... under our Charter of Rights. Go figure...

Nor Quebec without English Canada, that's why it's called the Great Bargain. 2 cultures that been at war for centuries were able to lie down in peace in a new land that guaranteed English Protesant rights in Lower Canada and French Catholic rights in Upper Canada.Without that bargain Quebec would be about as Fench as Louisianna for Ango America would have absorbed both Canadas. FDR advised MacKenzie King to assimilate like they do in the States having no real undertanding of what history predicts. BTW only those in the Maritimes who would not guarantee peaceful co-existence were sent to the Lousisanna, most stayed home.

Congrats and happy BD.
Perhaps a story a day translated for each other?
10:37 AM on 02/08/2013
Great suggestion, would be fun the comments sections for these translations would be the same.

It would be good to help each other to learn more about each other and what preoccupies each other in the news. :)
